scitopia.org (technology-based search engine)

Scitopia.org, the free, federated search portal created by leading science and technology societies, recently launched a new clustered search tool that allows for easier navigation and document retrieval from the technology-focused site. The six pre-defined clusters—topics, authors, publications, publishers, affiliation and date—can be expanded into multiple sub-categories for quicker, more detailed searching. In addition to the new clustering tool, scitopia.org added additional sorting options and a new function to download citations. The advanced search page has also been streamlined to allow for superior customized results. Visit scitopia.org to search the web for scientific and technical materials.

Current Protocols in Bioinformatics

The library has just obtained an online subscription to Current Protocols in Bioinformatics from 2003 to the present. Current Protocols in Bioinformatics makes it easy for the life scientist to become “fluent” in bioinformatics and master the new frontiers opened up by DNA sequencing, and:
· features step-by-step instructions for working with hundreds of applications and databases from research groups around the globe
· is designed for research biologists, not computational experts
· shows how to select the right software parameters, analyze data, interpret results, generate hypotheses, and advance research to new levels
· includes a valuable appendix on user fundamentals and a glossary of bioinformatics terms

Science and Engineering Indicators

Science and Engineering Indicators (http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/seind08/) is a biennial report, issued by the National Science Board, on the status of science and technology in the U.S., with comparisons to selected foreign countries. The report covers science and engineering (S/E) education and workforce; R & D funding and outputs; domestic and foreign technological innovations and trade of high-technology products; public knowledge of and attitudes toward science and technology; computer use in the home; and effects of information technologies on education and research.
